Woke up and sorted out my face and glasses. Then went outside and chatted with Steve and Ben before going to Ops to see if I had a flight booked. I had a slot at 13:00 with Scott Holmes; the guy who gave me my first intro flight. After breakfast I went to him and cancelled the flight as the wind is gale force today, and I want to try and spread the twelve-or-so hours I have left over my last two weeks. He didn't mind and understood my reasoning.
Then I went back with Waldo to his and Neale's block. They both had very sore heads. Made it back to my block in time to see Steve off and wish him all the best. Paul had already departed before I got up. Hopefully we'll be at Cranwell next year, coaching the next lot of candidates for this excellent scholarship.
Lunch came and went. Me and Ben struck up a plan to Braai for dinner with Stephan; an AMO engineer, and his mate Germaine. After doing some odds and sods I went up to Neale and Waldo's. Neale was trying to sleep off the night before, so me and Waldo went into town to grab some meat, bread and sauce.
While we were out we noticed massive bush fires with huge blooms of smoke being blown northbound. Worryingly, large flames could be seen just outside of the airbase perimeter. Indeed firefighters were actually burning the undergrowth inside, in order to deprive the fire of fuel, should it creep in any more.
When we got back, Neale finally got up and about again, and we all went to the (shut) bar. Neale and Waldo played some pool. All of a sudden the refrigerator stopped making it's horrendous racket and the lights went out. Night fell pretty quickly and as we began braaing, the bar and canteen were lit by candlelight only.
After some excellent grub and many games of cards in the bar, the TV, lights and fridge suddenly sparked into life. We were all quite thankful! After a few more beers, we decided to hit the sack.

Hi Rich, from the (kind of) sunny UK.
Sorry I didn't get to say goodbye to you & Ben. It sucks.
My instructor, Tian Proudfoot, filed the flightplan to PE and wanted to leave at 0900, and I had to meet him at 0830.
I heard you guys come back from town at about 3am, so I figured I best not wake you! I saw Neale before I left, but say hi to Ben, Waldo, Stephan, Germaine and everyone else for me!
Enjoy the flying.
