Not much else happened today really. More fires erupted close by to the base. Me and Ben were playing cards by the pool, and saw the air school's sole fire-fighting appliance; which consists of a flatbed with a tank on the back, refilling at the water vane a few times.
The fires are getting pretty serious. Within spitting distance from the perimeter fence. The warm winds didn't help matters either. If the fire were to actually spread into the base, there would be very little chance in stopping it. So its all up to the cadets to keep it at bay. The local fire department has only one appliance - and it is broken! Indeed the local sewage plant has more trucks/capacity, and they were used to spray rot all over the fires instead.
It's worth noting that the cadets are wannabe aviators like everyone else here. They work for the school, and in return they get flying hours and training up to CPL, and a minimal pay. These guys do an excellent job under difficult conditions. But now on top of their solid day of work, they are then relied upon to fight fires. Right now as I type, at 22:10, they are out there cracking on after almost three days of firefighting. The best part is that this isn't considered as overtime or work, but is still their responsibility, and they're still expected to be up early tomorrow for another full day's work, and any firefighting on top.
